The 2024 Olympic games in Paris this summer are a reminder of classical music’s long-standing ceremonial role. From composer Josef Suk’s medal-winning patriotic march, Into a New Life, in the 1932 Summer Olympics to Lang Lang’s (Piano ’02) riveting 2008 performance at the opening ceremony, Overtones‘ editor Brian Wise delves into the history of music as an Olympic contender and talks with Curtis alumni Jun-Ching Lin (Violin ’85), Christina Smith (Flute ’91), and Lisa Byrnes (Flute ’89), who have all performed in past ceremonies.
