A Star Trek cruise offers an unusual performance opportunity for alumni and faculty

A chamber ensemble of Curtis Institute of Music alumni recently joined famed actor John de Lancie—Q in the Star Trek franchise and son of John de Lancie (’40), former Curtis director, faculty member, and Philadelphia Orchestra principal oboist—to perform for science fiction fans on a weeklong Caribbean cruise called Star Trek: The Cruise VII. Patricia K. Johnson, Curtis’ vice president of communications and public affairs, relates how this Curtis collaboration came about and talks with Nick DiBerardino (’18), dean and chair of composition studies, about his Star Trek-themed work Darmok & Jalad, and describes what it was like to perform on this unique ship.
