Cellist Jiayin He (’23) Joins The Philadelphia Orchestra
Curtis congratulates cello student Jiayin He (’23), who was recently announced as one of four new musicians appointed to The Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of music and artistic director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Curtis’ head of conducting and music director of the Metropolitan Opera. Mr. He, a native of Shanghai, China, entered Curtis in 2018 and studies cello with Nicholas Canellakis (’06), Gary Hoffman, Yumi Kendall (’04), Christine Lee (’13), and Peter Wiley (’74) as the Demeng Foundation Fellow. During the 2024–25 school year, Mr. He has served as principal cellist of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. The prize-winning musician joined the cello section of The Philadelphia Orchestra in February alongside cellists Michael Katz and Eugene Lin and violist Hsiang-Hsin Ching.
“Jiayin, Michael, Eugene, and Hsiang-Hsin each bring incredible talent, a true passion for music-making, and an energetic spirit for collaboration,” said music and artistic director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. “They will be invaluable members of their respective sections and to the Orchestra as a whole. I look forward to working with them and to witnessing their contributions to the Orchestra’s world-renowned string section.”
