Emad Zolfaghari and Ray Ushikubo (Violin ’22, Piano ’22) Win Prizes in 38th Klein Competition

Viola student Emad Zolfaghari and alumnus Ray Ushikubo (Violin ’22, Piano ’22) won first and third prizes, respectively, in the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, which is held annually at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Produced by the California Music Center, this prestigious competition—now in its fifth decade—is open to musicians between the ages of 15 and 23. This year, it is celebrating its 38th anniversary as a champion of the world’s finest young string players.

Violist Emad Zolfaghari received the grand prize award and performance contracts with the Peninsula and Santa Cruz Symphonies and Gualala Arts Chamber Series, among others. Third prize, presented in memory of Milton Preves by Judith and David Anderson, went to Ray Ushikubo, who majored in both violin and piano while at Curtis.
