A Tempo: New Faculty, All-School Project, Philadelphia’s Public Arts Funding

At the start of its centennial year, Curtis Institute of Music announced the appointment of four new faculty members: soloist, chamber musician, and multifaceted artist Nicholas Canellakis (Cello ’06); The Philadelphia Orchestra assistant principal Yumi Kendall (Cello ’04); Boston Symphony Orchestra member Christine Jeonghyoun Lee (Cello ’13); and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra principal clarinet YaoGuang Zhai (Clarinet ’09).

The 2024–25 Curtis All-School Project uses the pioneering spirit of Curtis founder Mary Louise Curtis Bok as a springboard to explore experimentation and modernism in the arts.

With the closing of University of the Arts in the spring of 2024, sounds of both alarm and potential have reverberated across the city and within the city’s arts community. Is Philadelphia’s public arts funding at a crossroads?
