About the Performers

Janice Carissa, from Surabaya, Indonesia, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2013 and studies piano with Robert McDonald. All students at Curtis receive merit-based, full-tuition scholarships, and Ms. Carissa is the Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest Fellow.

Among her numerous awards and honors, Ms. Carissa received a Arkady Fomin Scholarship in 2019 and was named a 2018 Career Grant winner by Charlotte White’s Salon De Virtuosi. She was also a Young Scholar of Lang Lang’s International Music Foundation; the runner-up in the 2014 piano competition at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Music Festival and School; and a Star Performance Award winner of the 2012 American Protégé International Music Talent Competition in New York.

Ms. Carissa debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 16 and with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at age 19. She has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, with Symphony in C, in WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase, and with the Grant Park Orchestra, among numerous other ensembles. Upcoming debuts include those with the Kansas City Symphony under Peter Oundjian and the Des Moines Symphony under Jahja Ling.

Ms. Carissa has performed nationally and internationally in notable venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Penderecki Center, the Kennedy Center, Merkin Hall, WQXR’s Greene Space, and Fondation Louis Vuitton, among many others. Her performances have been featured on WHYY-TV (Philadelphia), WQXR-FM (New York), PBS, Voice of America, NPR’s From the Top, and the Violin Channel’s Vanguard Series.

Ms. Carissa’s chamber music appearances include the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor, Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute, the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth, and regular engagements with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players, North Shore Chamber Music Festival, and ensemble132. She has attended the Aspen Music Festival and School, Oxford Philomusica, and most recently Marlboro Music Festival and School. Ms. Carissa has premiered works by Wang Jie, Timo Andres, Alyssa Weinberg, Andrew Moses, and Thomas Oltarzewski.
