Graduation Recital: Emily Shehi, violin
Violinist Emily Shehi’s graduation recital opens with selections from J. S. Bach’s Sonata No. 3 in C major. This sonata comes from Bach’s monumental collection of six Sonatas and Partitas, the summit of the solo violin repertoire. The performance continues with Eugène Ysaÿe’s joyful Sonata in G major, which includes a rustic country dance. “Fantasy: Remembering Roger” by Elliott Carter is a brief but poignant expression of gratitude toward his friend and fellow composer Roger Sessions, who died a year after the work’s completion. The recital ends with three sparkling gems by 20th-century virtuoso and musical trickster Fritz Kreisler.
