Reports to: Senior Director of Concert Production and Artistic Operations

Department: Production

Status: One-year temporary position; Part-time; Non-Exempt

The Coordinator of Percussion Operations and Instrument Collection Support works closely with the Senior Director of Concert Production and Artistic Operations and Curtis’s percussion faculty to facilitate the maintenance, purchase, rental, transportation, set-up, and load-out of Curtis’s percussion instruments. The Coordinator also assists the Manager of the Instrument Collection with Curtis’s other instrumental assets.

More Details and Qualifications

  • Essential Functions

    Key Responsibilities: 

    Percussion 

    • Prepare percussion instrumentation lists for all large ensemble cycles (Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Opera, Curtis New Music Ensemble), and student recitals as directed.  
    • Purchase or rent percussion instruments with the approval of the Senior Director, working closely with the percussion faculty to fulfill season needs.  
    • Prepare percussion plots for orchestral concerts.  
    • Oversee percussion set-up and load-out at rehearsals and performances.  
    • Coordinate all instrument packing and transportation with students and Production Associate.  
    • Maintain inventory of percussion instruments.   
    • Facilitate repairs, ordering new parts or transporting/shipping instruments with the approval of the Senior Director; handle minor repairs in-house.  
    • In consultation with the percussion faculty, assist the oversight of percussion student workers.  
    • A schedule will be provided; must be available for all noted performances/load-ins and able to travel for runouts.   

    Instrument Collection Support 

    • Meet with students/faculty as needed for instrument trials.  
    • Assist with instrument loan agreements as directed. 
    • Distribute instruments to students and collect instruments upon expiration of loan.   
    • Coordinate instrument rentals per the guidance of Orchestra and Production Staff.  
    • Assist with maintaining collection records, inclusive of repair work.  

    Other Duties

    • When available and based on interest and ability, Coordinator may support other colleagues/areas in Concert Production, with the approval of the Senior Director.   
    • If Coordinator is already a verified substitute musician with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, they may continue to be hired separately for services as needed and available. These hours will be paid per the Sub Musician Policy and will not affect hours worked for this position.

  • Working Conditions, Physical Demands, and Requirements
    • Position is located in Philadelphia and an in-person presence is required at the services described above. Administrative work may be done remotely. 
    • This position is part-time, 29 hours per week.
    • This is a one-year, temporary position with an August 12, 2024 start date and a June 7, 2025 end date.
    • Travel and some night and/or weekend work may be required occasionally, particularly during the concert weeks.
    • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer at the time of hire.
    • COVID-19 vaccination is a requirement for all positions at the Curtis Institute of Music and all new hires are expected to be fully vaccinated before beginning work.
  • Compensation and Benefits
    • Gross hourly compensation is $20/hour with the expectation of 29 hours per week.
    • Scheduled weeks off without compensation will be November 26 – 30, 2024, and December 21, 2024 through January 5, 2025.
    • This position is not benefits eligible.
