Graduation Recital: Grace Takeda, viola
Violist Grace Takeda opens her graduation recital with J. S. Bach’s transcendent Suite No. 2 in D minor and continues with Henri Vieuxtemps’s “Hommage à Paganini,” one virtuoso’s impassioned tribute to another. The recital continues with American composer Quincy Porter’s boisterous Suite for Solo Viola; the dramatic Cadenza, a piece by recently-deceased Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki; and Atar Arad’s poignant tribute to him. Grace concludes her recital with Prelude by Ana Sokolovic, a pensive work inspired by Indian and Middle-Eastern music traditions.
This recital is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Rosalyn Tureck—keyboard artist, teacher, conductor, scholar, author, and lecturer. Dr. Tureck was devoted to the research and performance of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and also befriended and championed the works of many living American composers in her time.
