Dongyoung Jake Shim Wins Third Prize at IsangYun Violin Competition
Congratulations to Curtis student Dongyoung Jake Shim, who recently won the third prize of KRW 10,0000 (USD $7,100) and the Isang Yun Special Prize at the 2024 IsangYun Violin Competition in Tongyeong, South Korea. Each winner also received an opportunity to perform solo with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra at a future date. Named for the renowned Korean composer Isang Yun (1917–95), the competition supports emerging international soloists and cultural exchange among nations and alternates between violin, cello, and piano editions each year.
Held from November 2 to 10 in the Tongyeong Concert Hall, the 2024 edition of the competition featured violinists aged 15 to 30 and an esteemed jury of panelists chaired by Mihaela Martin. The first prize went to Chaowen Luo, and the second prize went to Eunjoong Park.

Dongyoung Jake Shim, from Seoul, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2022 and studies violin with Shmuel Ashkenasi and Ida Kavafian as the Dorothea and Ray Posel Fellow. He has won numerous competitions, including first prize and the Bach prize at the Stulberg International String Competition, fourth prize at the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, and top prizes at the Busan Maru International Music Festival Concerto Competition and Ewha Kyunghyang Music Competition. Mr. Shim earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory as a student of Donald Weilerstein and was a recipient of the Tan Family Education Grant and Dean’s Scholarship. He previously studied at the Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School.
