About the Performers
Karisa Chiu, from Palatine, Ill., entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2017 and studies violin with Ida Kavafian. All students at Curtis receive merit-based, full-tuition scholarships, and Ms. Chiu is the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Annual Fellow.
Ms. Chiu was a participant in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2021 and has won top prizes from many others including the 2019 Leopold Mozart Competition, the 2017 Stulberg International String Competition, 2017 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, 2015 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Violin Competition, 2016 Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition, and 2016 Walgreens National Concerto Competition. She received the Jerome and Elaine Nerenberg Foundation Scholarship from the Musicians Club of Women.
Ms. Chiu has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Munich Radio Orchestra; the Elmhurst, Skokie Valley, Montgomery, Kishwaukee, Northbrook, West Suburban, and Oistrakh symphony orchestras; and the orchestra of the Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, where she was a student for four years. In 2017, she was invited to give a solo recital at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago, which was broadcast live over WFMT radio. She was selected as a 2017 YoungArts Finalist and she has appeared on NPR’s From the Top. She has performed as a regular substitute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2018.
As an avid chamber musician, Ms. Chiu has been a member of many string quartets and piano trios through the Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago. Her ensembles have been prize-winners at the St. Paul String Quartet Competition and the Rembrandt, Discover, Pearl G. Barnett, and M-Prize International chamber music competitions.
Ms. Chiu has participated in the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival Winter Workshop; Music from Angel Fire; the Aspen, Chautauqua, and Bowdoin music festivals; and the Indiana University String Academy. She began violin lessons at age three with her father, Cornelius Chiu of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has also studied with Almita Vamos of Roosevelt University. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, fitness, and taking walks with her dog, Cody.
Zhu Wang, from Hunan Province, China, is a student of Robert McDonald and entered Curtis in 2020.
