In the spring of 2019 I traveled to Colombia to give classes at the Iberacademy in Medellin. In the evening, after the sun went down, the city would come alive to the sound of salsa music. The later the evening got, the more bands I heard playing in restaurants and clubs throughout the city. The sound of the trumpet wafted through the air as I walked the lonely streets while people inside danced and listened to the music. Midnight in Medellin is a snapshot of that moment.

Trumpet player and composer Steven Franklin is the Principal Trumpet of the St. Louis Symphony. Having graduated Curtis in 2018, he is an active composer who has written for ensembles such as the American Brass Quintet and seeks to expand the repertoire of chamber music written for brass instruments.
