Invocación y Zarabandas
Solo Cello
Luis Gustavo Prado
Centennial Commission
About
Written for solo cello, this piece reflects both my cultural heritage and personal journey, inspired by new musicological findings about the Sarabande’s origins in the Spanish Antilles. Until the late 17th century, Spanish composers wrote both fast and slow Zarabandas. My work begins with an introduction, followed by two slow Zarabandas, and concludes with a fast one that serves as a coda. I created a cryptogram based on the name “Curtis” to shape the opening and bring closure. This piece celebrates cultural cross-pollination across centuries and the places where it thrives! Thank you, Curtis and John Koen for this collaboration!
