Gyre - - - Tone
Multi-Track Bass Trombone & Film
Kurt Rohde
Centennial Commission
About
Created for the Curtis Institute of Music’s 100th Anniversary celebration, gyre – – – tone is quiet, simple, expansive, inexorable, deliberate; there’s nothing flashy about either the music or its affect. As a viola/composition student at Curtis, I was ridiculously young and naïve; everything seemed flashy and impressive to me. All these years later, I consider how this piece could not have written by me back then; I wouldn’t even have known how. Here, “gyre” is that long, slow current carrying us through life, inside which the “tones” circle – faster, compact movements mapping each chapter of the voyage. In the end, the “currents” of piece form a large loop.
