For Solo Viola
Solo Viola
Ya-Jhu Yang
Centennial Commission
About
For Solo Viola, written for the fabulous Ayane Kozasa, is built on a small, contemplative motif that unfolds in various directions over the course of the five and a half minute piece. A contrasting, spritely idea is also introduced, but its attempts to alter the character of the piece are in vain: the contemplative idea invariably takes over again. Gradually, this primary idea discovers within itself greater intensity: adding chromaticism, tremolando, and register, it drives the piece to its ultimate climax. A concluding phrase is a reminiscence of the opening, now resolved and serene.
