John de Lancie & Nick DiBerardino (Composition '18) Interviewed About Curtis's "L'Histoire du Soldat" Tour

The beloved 'Star Trek' actor and Ensemble 20/21 director discuss their upcoming concert in Portland, Oregon with Willamette Week

Beloved actor, director, producer, writer, and comedian John de Lancie and Nick DiBerardino (Composition ’18), Ensemble 20/21 director, acclaimed composer, chair of composition studies, and senior associate dean of performance studies at Curtis, were interviewed in Willamette Week, in advance of Curtis’s L’Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) tour performance in Portland, Oregon. Mr. de Lancie discusses narrating Igor Stravinsky’s musical fable and attending Curtis performances at the Academy of Music, when his father, Philadelphia Orchestra oboist John de Lancie Sr., taught at Curtis and served as the director of the school. Mr. DiBerardino shares the origin and inspiration for his world premiere chamber piece, Darmok & Jalad, a title that refers to an iconic episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Curtis on Tour proudly presents L’Histoire du Soldat alongside works by Viet Cuong (Composition ’19), Francis Poulenc’s vivacious Sonata for clarinet and bassoon, Krzysztof Penderecki‘s rhapsodic Duo Concertante for violin and double bass, and Nick DiBerardino’s Darmok & Jalad here in Philadelphia on Thursday, March 21, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. at the Philadelphia Film Center.
